Staff Lawyer Position

Justice Niagara (JN) is a non-profit community based legal clinic funded by Legal Aid Ontario. We provide a broad range of legal services to the communities of Niagara South including:  Welland, Thorold, Pelham, Fort Erie, Crystal Beach, Port Colborne and Wainfleet and work collaboratively with our sister clinic in Niagara North.

Our work includes individual summary advice and case work, public legal education, and community development in numerous poverty law areas including: disability & income maintenance, tenant’s rights, employment law, human rights, wills and powers of attorney, consumer law, workers compensation, criminal injuries compensation, immigration, among others.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced lawyer with a broad range of practice in low income or poverty law issues and practice experience before Administrative Tribunals and Civil Courts (5+ years). This position will be actively involved in outreach and community development work, public legal education, and law reform activities.  Experience in staff supervision and support will be an asset.

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to social justice and issues that affect low income individuals and groups. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are needed to address the needs of clients from a variety of social and cultural backgrounds.   A collaborative work approach with the ability to work in a team based environment is required.

This is a full time, ongoing position. Salary is based on experience and competency and is contingent on funding from Legal Aid Ontario.

The Board of Directors of Justice Niagara are pleased to announce the appointment of Michael A. Foster, LL.B. as Executive Director effective April 1st, 2017.  Michael was called to the Bar in 1986 when he began a litigation practice before joining Justice Niagara (formerly Community Legal Service of Niagara South) in May of 1993 as Staff Lawyer.  Michael has been an integral part of the JN team since then and has most recently been serving as Director of Legal Services.  We congratulate Michael on his new role and look forward to his experience and leadership as we move forward.

At the same time, our current CEO/ED Jim Sykes will be stepping into a new part-time staff role as our Board Facilitator for the next six months as we work on further developing our board role in governing the organization.  We would like to thank Jim publicly for his very successful work in strengthening our clinic over the past almost four years, and also representing our clinic within the Southwest Region’s Transformation process.
